What does it mean to unlock an iPhone?
When you buy an iPhone through a carrier on a payment plan or at a subsidized price, it’s often locked to that carrier — meaning it won’t work with other carriers’ SIM cards. Unlocking permanently removes that restriction, letting you use any carrier’s SIM card in the same phone.
Is iPhone unlocking legal?
Yes. The Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, signed into law in 2014, makes it fully legal for consumers to unlock their cell phones in the United States. Carriers are also required by the FCC to unlock devices that have been fully paid off.
How do I know if my iPhone is locked?
Go to Settings → General → About and look for “Carrier Lock.” If it says “No SIM Restrictions,” your iPhone is already unlocked. If it names a specific carrier, it’s locked. You can also simply try inserting a SIM from a different carrier — a locked phone will show an error.
Will unlocking erase my data?
No. A carrier unlock does not erase your data, apps, photos, or settings. Everything on your iPhone stays exactly as it is — only the carrier restriction is removed.
